Sunday's Spotlight: S.T.A.G.S

35154365Nine students. Three bloodsports. One deadly weekend.

It is the autumn term and Greer MacDonald is struggling to settle into the sixth form at the exclusive St. Aidan the Great boarding school, known to its privileged pupils as S.T.A.G.S. Just when she despairs of making friends Greer receives a mysterious invitation with three words embossed upon on it: huntin' shootin' fishin'. When Greer learns that the invitation is to spend the half term weekend at the country manor of Henry de Warlencourt, the most popular and wealthy boy at S.T.A.G.S., she is as surprised as she is flattered.

But when Greer joins the other chosen few at the ancient and sprawling Longcross Hall, she realises that Henry's parents are not at home; the only adults present are a cohort of eerily compliant servants. The students are at the mercy of their capricious host, and, over the next three days, as the three bloodsports - hunting, shooting and fishing - become increasingly dark and twisted, Greer comes to the horrifying realisation that those being hunted are not wild game, but the very misfits Henry has brought with him from school...

What Readers are Saying about Cathadeus:

“Jeff J. Peters’ strong cinematic writing style allowed me to easily visualize the story and feel that I was right there alongside the characters.”

- Alison W.

“Jeff J. Peters’ writing is so smooth and easy to read – I can’t tell you how much of a pleasure it was…and how quickly you end up being drawn into the story because of it.”

- Amanda R.

“Cathadeus is the best kind of fantasy story - you get to learn along with a flawed main character while you get lost in a richly designed world. You can’t help but keep reading. A cleanly written pairing of characters you wish you could spend more time with and an enthralling world built around them. Cathadeus is the kind of story that plays perfectly off of your imagination, with characters grounded in reality to make it feel like you could really be there.”

- Ryan N.

“Jeff J. Peters definitely has storytelling skills...The story stayed on my mind when I wasn’t reading it. Young readers will be drawn in this imaginative story, while they relate to Braxton’s struggles with temper, insecurity, and young love. Cathadeus is dramatic, with an anxious tone—at times bleak, as the story keeps you wondering until the final battle if good will prevail.”

- Elizabeth C.

REVIEW: I enjoyed this story, but in parts it was a bit much. The ranks and other language used is unfimilar, and I had to check the glossary often to keep up. The overall story was fun though, and I enjoyed the world-building. Khyais an interesting character, and I loved seeing her journey to save her brother.

Guest Post: Character Interview

Hello! Thank you so much for having me today!! I wanted to share some things that you may find interesting about my main character Kaeleigh from The Age of Alandria series.

*Ahem, throat clearing*
Chel: Excuse me, Morgan, but I think if anyone is going to talk about Kaeleigh it should be me! ;) *Chel bounces behind me.

Me: Well, hi Chel, I didn’t know you would be here, but I should’ve known better. Where’s Finn?

*Chel nods to the back of the room*
*Finn stands at the back of the room, arms crossed, and scowling*
Chel: Oh Finn, relax. I’m not going to share anything Kaeleigh wouldn’t want people to know.

*Finn Slinks over from where he was skulking in the corner with a cheesy grin*
Finn: I know, that’s why Chel and I will take it from here.

Me: Okay, well, everyone let me introduce you to Kaeleigh’s two best friends… Finn and Chel.

Chel: I’m so excited! Thank you for having us here today.

Finn: Um, Chel… they didn’t. We hijacked this post.

Chel: Technicalities Finn *waves hand flippantly* Plus who knows Kaeleigh better than her BEST friend?

Finn: (s)

Chel: Huh?

Finn: friends. You said friend. I added the ‘s’.

Chel: Hmm. Well, you better hope that Morgan doesn’t do something drastic to you in book 2.

Finn: *glares*

Chel: Just sayin’. Ok let’s get this show on the road! I’ll go first…

Finn: Of course you will *mumbles under his breath*

Chel: *glares back* those were my dagger eyes

Finn: Oh is that what that was? I thought maybe you just had something in both your eyes

Me: Ok you two, this is suppose to be about Kaeleigh. These people have things to do, get on with it!

Chel: First off, you should know that Kaeleigh is the best friend a girl *ahem* or guy (eye roll to Finn) could have. She is loyal and caring, she always thinks of us before herself.

Finn: I’m not sure that isn’t something they couldn’t figure out.

Chel: Fine. You go.

Finn: *sighs* I don’t like this. I don’t think she would appreciate us talking about her.

Chel: Oh! I got one… Kaeleigh is a restless sleeper. She kicks!

Finn: *smirks* And she talks in her sleep.

Chel: See this is fun.

Finn: *frowns*

Chel: Hey I’m doing all the work here. Your turn.

Finn: Kaeleigh calls me if she hasn’t heard from me after a couple days, just to make sure I’m not lying dead, alone, on the floor in my apartment.

Chel: Oookay… that was morbid, Finn. Back to me. Remember last winter when I found an injured stray cat? I tried to take care of it, but it got real bad. Kaeleigh helped me take it to the vet. *pause and looks down, hands wringing* That’s why she got fired from that secretary job.

Finn: *growls* Chel, you know she’s allergic to cats. You should have called me.

Chel: I know, but you would have just told me not to bother. Did you even hear me though, I’m the reason she lost her job.

Finn: *shrugs* It obviously didn’t bother her that much—she got another one. It’s just a job to her. You are her family and that means something.

Chel: *takes deep breath* You’re right Finn, thanks. You know, you’re all right when you want to be. I think Kaeleigh is the only person who can make you smile, but you know that, don’t you?

Finn *stands up non-chalantly* Hey Morgan, I think we are finished here, if you need to say anything.

Me: Thanks Finn for remembering that I was even here. Chel, anything else you want to add?

Chel: No, I’m good. Thank you for letting us hijack your post. It was fun! *pokes Finn*

Ok, well, I hope you were able to learn a little something about my main character and maybe even a little about the dynamic of her posse. Thank you for indulging my characters today!

Young Adult Sci-Fi, Fantasy

Coming 2018

Mackenzie Scott is trapped in another realm, but that’s the least of her problems. Magic runs through her veins, and even now she can feel herself changing. She’s managed to help her brother, but in exchange, she’s turning into one of them. Worse, Mackenzie’s not just a monster. She’s their queen.

Hunter had one job: open the gateway between worlds to keep his realm alive. He hadn’t counted on betrayal, or being saved by a human girl. And he’d never guessed he couldn’t trust his own king. Now he’s snared in an unwinnable catch, and his only choice is to leave the one thing that’s ever mattered to him to save a world he can never belong to.

Separated by realms, Mackenzie and Hunter must save the other’s world. But the divide isn’t the only thing working against them. Beasts and men fight a complicated battle that pits Hunter and Mackenzie against those they’re trying to protect, and the clock is ticking.

Guest Post: What Sort of Monster Are You?

QUEEN OF IRON AND BLOOD, book two in the Shattered Realms series, takes place in a world of monsters. Check out the exclusive excerpt below, and use the Chimera Generator to create your own!

A figure waited on the ledge above him, silent, dark wings still. Hunter could feel her though, the ancient energy recharged like the rest of his world. “I cannot leave them sleeping,” he told her. “The risk is too great.” If Malkyn killed Hunter, if he were not able to return, these new Iron Bound would never be awakened. It would be an eternal wasting away, a thousand-year massacre.

The virago made a noise like the purr of a horse, though her face was something more human than mare. In all fairness, though, she was more beast than anything else. “Your queen can bear it, she thinks,” the virago said.

Hunter turned to look up at the virago, her dark mane swept back over the slick black of her shoulders. From his vantage point, Hunter couldn’t help but think this was the last thing some of the Iron Bound had ever seen—sleek fur on a winged beast, her curved talons shining like onyx overhead. Hunter nodded. “I believe she can—if it is to be done at all, Mackenzie has the strength for it.” But it would not be safe. She would not be safe.

The virago brought herself to her full height. “Your queen does not stand alone.”

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

If you are browsing this little book, you are looking for something. Perhaps you are seeking instruction in how to make someone you love with an addiction behave. Maybe you are not sure if the label co-dependent applies to you, or you are just curious. Or you may be at the end of your rope, tired of being tired, constantly anxious and wondering what has happened to your life. I was there too. Just as there is no magic pill to cure addiction, there is no magic pill for co-dependency or the crippling effects of living with an addicted person. The cure is the pain. When it becomes unbearable and you hit your personal rock bottom then you can break the habits of covering up, keeping secrets and toughing it out alone. You will reach out for help and you will find it. If your life is moving along nicely or a whirlwind you are barely surviving you can take five to ten minutes a day to read a page, a verse and think on the questions. You can give yourself this time, you need it and deserve it. This is for you.

What happens when Beauty becomes the Beast?

Vynasha has become prisoner with the other wyld beasts of the castle, but she is not alone. In the howling darkness her majikal bond with the Dungeon Master, Grendall, grows, awakening the dormant power in her blood.

Yet as she discovers the true nature of the other beasts, she learns she must embrace madness in order to free them all. Vynasha is willing to do anything to end the curse, even if that means transforming into a monster.

Buried secrets come to light in this seductive sequel to Craving Beauty, the Gothic retelling of the classic fairy tale of Beauty and the Beast, where nothing is exactly as it seems and the heroine must be her own hero.

Excerpt

The beast’s life had been forfeit the hour the Prince locked her in the dungeon.

She often dreamed of glittering gems beneath a canopy of starlight and soft silks against satin skin. A perfect wolf moon gleamed in the glass skylight above so silvery beams blended together with the hazy glow of a dozen candelabrum. Joy filled her every step as they danced together, her hand in his, smile lines about his perfect silver eyes. He was like the moonlight and she filled with all the warmth of the sun. His words blurred together in her memory, full of promise and hope until her light died. It was the last moment of her life she could remember and though she could not explain how she knew this, the moment her dreams died.

All dreams die in the damp dim of the dungeon of Castle Bitterhelm.

The beast woke to the echoing roars of her brothers and sisters, kin who were trapped half an age and more, then snarled at the lingering memories. Dreams and memories, like jagged pieces of broken glass stabbed at her mind now and then at the worst opportunity. Just as she was enjoying the feeling of air moving through her fur, as she sat back to release her own cry to the moon.

In the endless black of their prison, she had forgotten much more than the name of the castle. Now it came to her as her last moments as a woman came to her mind, stalling her lumbering movements. She froze, the cry escaping as a bitter whine and she twisted her great head to the courtyard behind her. Bushes covered in blood-red blossoms surrounded her and inside the castle, her brothers and sisters waged war against the master.

And our minds, the thought came softly.

Darkness and pain had been her sole companions for so long, alongside the occasional cries of the others, until she came.

Curse Breaker, she tried to speak her name. The One had come to them at last.

Too late!

They were too far-gone, she wanted to tell the girl. A deeper part of her, the beast who had slumbered half an age, wanted to rip into their long-awaited savior. She wasn’t sure why she both loathed and longed to touch the curse breaker. Twin glowing eyes, like a wyldcat’s, blazed through the bars of her cell, piercing through the dark and stirring something long forgotten. Immediately, she rose and stumbled as her chains were broken. The girl smiled at her with sharp teeth and then left the door open behind her.

Come and be free, the Curse Breaker said to their minds as she opened their cell doors, breaking both their physical chains and the majik blocking their free will. The curse tied them together in malice yet, however. The eldest among them had one conscious thought that quickly spread through to the others.

Kill the masters!

Too long they had waited to be freed and now they wanted vengeance. Too late for the curse breaker to call them back. Now they would seek and find their pound of flesh.

She thought of her dream again as she leaped and clawed over the hedge, wondered at her reason for coming to the garden while her brethren haunted the rest of the ruin. Another unattainable memory, not to be grasped by beasts after all. This much she knew. None had come as close as she did, to what or who, she was uncertain.

The Curse Breaker will know.

To her surprise, no majik, wyne or beast barred her from slipping past the gates of the Lost City, once known as Bitterhelm. The stars glowed brighter on her fur as she crossed the open downslope between the two mountains. The fog that kept her thoughts hazy seemed to dissipate the further she pushed into the forest below. A lingering ache made her turn one last time towards Bitterhelm’s crumbling towers. A bitter human feeling, that she was forgetting the most important thing of all by leaving, almost made her return to the garden with its sweet roses. But the wyne was right. Too many of her brothers and sisters were filled with violence alone, now. They needed the Curse Breaker to help them remember.

With this final thought, she turned to the forest, trusting an otherworldly sense tying them to the One who came to save and then abandoned them to madness.

Review: The Holtur Enigma

34996546 The Holtur Enigma by Cameron Wayne Smith
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The monsters you fear are nothing compared to the ones you do not.

With the threat of a monstrous army arising, Vivian has set off towards the town of Holtur. His job is to conscript the toughest men he can find, in a location known for producing some of the best monster slayers around. However, Holtur has its own issues, and helping this stranger is far from a priority.

Will Vivian convince the people of Holtur to help his cause? Or will he fall victim to the beasts, wyverns, or horrors that surround the town? It doesn’t take long for him to discover that he was nowhere near prepared for this godforsaken land.

~Mark of the Mage is a B.R.A.G Medallion Honoree~

Books never die, but they can be forbidden.

Medeisia is a country in turmoil ruled by a blood thirsty king who has outlawed the use of magic and anything pertaining to knowledge. Magery and scribery are forbidden. All who practice are marked with a tattoo branded onto their wrists, their futures precarious.

Sixteen year-old Drastona Consta-Mayria lives secluded, spending her spare time in the Archives of her father's manor surrounded by scribes. She wants nothing more than to become one of them, but when the scribes are royally disbanded, she is thrust into a harsh world where the marked must survive or die.

“Light a mage-fire!” the red coated man ordered.

I was screaming now, the sound shrill. The other men looked at their captain with wide eyes.

“And risk the trees?” a young soldier asked. The older man's gaze moved to the private, and the boy shifted uncomfortably.

“The trees will not burn. Light a fire.” The captain's voice was low and commanding with a threatening undercurrent no one seemed willing to test.

A hand was over my mouth now, and I looked up wildly only to find myself peering into Jarvis' youthful face.

“Quiet, miss. They'll only burn you as well,” the boy whispered against my ear. Even at thirteen, the boy was the same height as me, and he was strong. I fought him desperately, but he didn't loosen his hold. “You've always been nice to me, miss. Please,” he begged.

Aigneis didn't struggle as they tied her to a hastily constructed pyre of wood. I screamed against Jarvis' hand, my head throbbing furiously. They couldn't do this! They couldn't!

“By order of King Raemon, this woman has been accused of sorcery. The punishment is death. All present bear witness. Light the fire,” the captain announced.

Another red coated soldier lifted a torch, saluting Igneet, God of Fire, before throwing it onto the pyre. Wood crackled as it lit, some of it sputtering, and I was suddenly hopeful. I pulled on Jarvis's hand.

“The wood is too wet! It's too wet!” I whispered furiously, but Jarvis simply re-covered my mouth before angling his head at the red-breasted captain. It was then I noticed the way the man's hands glowed as he held them toward the pyre. The man was a mage. The king's captain was a mage. I screamed again, and Jarvis held me.

I kicked furiously, finally breaking free as the flames took hold, the wood near Aigneis' feet beginning to smolder and pop.

Two soldiers caught me before I neared the fire, holding me back when I tried to throw myself at Aigneis. Their fingers dug cruelly into the skin on my upper arms, but I barely noticed the pain. I wasn't even sure I was breathing. Each breath was a sob. My lungs burned.

The edge of Aigneis' dress caught fire, and I struggled against the men's hold. I wanted to shut my eyes but couldn't. There was banging from a carriage behind me, and I twisted just long enough to see my father kicking at the walls of the coach where he was bound. I tried to move toward him, but the soldiers' grips were too strong, too unyielding.

It was then Aigneis screamed. For the rest of my life, I would remember that scream; the pain, the despair, the fury in her voice. The same emotions roiled through my veins. My screams met hers in the night, in the forest where a mage-fire was being controlled by a sorcerer.

Screams . . . the smell of burning flesh.

Those screams would haunt me forever.

Those screams ripped through my heart.

Those screams tore at my soul.

Screaming . . . and then silence. Nothing left except the putrid smell of death, and the popping sound of flames. Someone sobbed. Someone yelled threats. Someone even scratched the faces of the soldiers.

In the end, I'm pretty sure that someone was me.
